The most important thing when you start counselling is feeling safe and comfortable in the room with your Counsellor. You should not feel pressure to talk about the stuff that is bothering you until you are ready and then feel supported to find ways of making this doable for you.
Sometimes it is hard to talk, hard to find the right words, or just too much to say out loud. Drawing, whether abstract, stick characters or imagery, choosing a ready made image, clay or play-dough modelling can all give you another way of expressing your feelings or showing what you want to say. Sometimes the arts can help find a different perspective or discover buried emotion.
Having the arts available suppports talking about yourself and your feelings.
